INSIDE THE QUARTERBACKS INVITED TO THE 2013 NFL COMBINE

Posted by Kevin Bowen on – 1:14 pm

Colts.com takes a closer look at the 16 quarterbacks invited to this year’s NFL Combine. The 2013 combine takes place Indianapolis and begins on Feb. 20, spanning six days. The quarterbacks invited are as followed:

Quarterbacks (16)

*Indicates eligibility remaining

Matt Barkley – USC

-A shoulder injury late in his senior season sidelined Barkley for the final two games of his USC career. Barkley lived up to the heralded hype coming out of Mater Dei High School, setting 20 USC records.

*Tyler Bray – Tennessee

-The tall and lanky Bray is the lone quarterback at the combine leaving school with eligibility remaining. Bray, a California native, threw 34 touchdowns last season and is known to have one of the strongest arms of the 2013 quarterback class.

Colby Cameron – Louisiana Tech

-Cameron led a prolific Tech offense that scored at least 41 points in 11-of-12 games this season. Cameron set an NCAA-record of 445 straight pass attempts without an interception dating back to the final game of the 2011 campaign. Colby’s older brother, Cameron, plays tight end for the Cleveland Browns.

Zac Dysert – Miami – OH

-Looking to follow in the footsteps of former RedHawks quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, it’s Dysert that holds the school-record with 12,013 passing yards. In a game against Akron on Sept. 29, Dysert became the first NCAA FBS player to pass for 500 yards (516) and run for 100 yards (108) in a single game.

Mike Glennon – N.C. State

-Glennon followed Russell Wilson and became the first Wolfpack quarterback to throw for 30 or more touchdowns in two different seasons. Glennon participated in the Senior Bowl and measured in at six-foot-six-inches in Mobile, Ala.

Marquis Gray – Minnesota

-Gray, an Indianapolis native, played at Ben Davis High School before seeing time at both receiver (60 career catches) and quarterback (13 starts) during his four-year career with the Golden Gophers.

Landry Jones – Oklahoma

-After 50 starts as the Sooners signal caller, Jones leaves Norman as the Big 12’s all-time leading passer with 16,646 yards. On his Senior Day, Jones set school records with 46 completions in 71 attempts as the Sooners knocked off rival Oklahoma State, 51-48.

Collin Klein – Kansas St.

-The Heisman finalist made the switch from receiver to quarterback early in his college career and helped lead the Wildcats into the National Title picture last season. Klein had 22 touchdowns on the ground and 2,490 passing yards in 2012 but it’s his 27 rushing touchdowns in 2011 that is a Football Bowl Subdivision record for quarterbacks.

E.J. Manuel – Florida St.

-The 240-pound Manuel hails from the Virginia Beach family, which has become a pipeline to the NFL. Manuel split time early on in his career at Florida St. with Christian Ponder and he is just the second quarterback in college football history to win four straight bowl games.

Ryan Nassib – Syracuse

-Nassib participated in the 2013 Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala. While he might not have the physical stature of some of the other quarterbacks at the combine, Nassib did re-write the Orange record books, starting the final two seasons and ended his career with a Pinstripe Bowl Victory.

Sean Renfree – Duke

-A pectoral injury suffered on his last collegiate pass has turned this process into an uncertain one for Renfree. Questions about his health will be the main topic in discussing the most accurate passer in Duke history.

Matt Scott – Arizona

-After redshirting behind Eagles quarterback Nick Foles in 2011, Scott flourished under new coach Rick Rodriguez. Scott’s dual-threat ability led an electric Wildcats offense to a 17-point comeback victory in the New Mexico Bowl.

Geno Smith – West Virginia

-Smith put up prolific numbers for the Mountaineers, throwing for over 4,000 yards in each of his final two seasons in Morgantown. On Senior Day, Smith tied an NCAA record for completion percentage (95.8 percent) when he was 23-of-24 for 407 yards and three touchdowns in a 50-17 victory over Kansas.

Brad Sorensen – Southern Utah

-Sorenson is the only non Division-I quarterback invited to the combine after playing his career at Southern Utah upon transferring from BYU in 2009. The six-foot-five-inch, 235-pound Sorenson threw for just under 9,945 yards and 61 touchdowns in three seasons for the Thunderbirds.

James Vandenberg – Iowa

-One of two Big Ten representatives at the quarterback position, Vandenberg enters the draft coming off a senior season that did not live up to the numbers he produced in 2011. Vandenberg threw for 25 touchdowns in 2011 but that number dropped to seven this past season.

Tyler Wilson – Arkansas

-Wilson, a highly regarded pitcher in high school with MLB potential, became the first Razorback quarterback in school history to be named first team All-SEC. He also broke the Arkansas single-season record with five 350-yard passing games in 2012 and holds a total of 29 schools records.
