Looks like we are getting busy today. I know a lot of you are thinking we are missing out on some of the high name free agents but lets leave the G.M. work to Ryan. Lots more to come I am sure.

Not a bad start – looking forward to seeing the $ comitment made, as none of these signings is what I would term “top-shelf”. Given the huge dollars required to sign those players (such as Kruger), however, this may have been the best start we could have. No sense in creating cap issue down the road by over-paying for over-rated players who might not fit the scheme. I hope that Cherilus is closer to what he was projected to be in his draft year than what he has shown to date in Mo-town though, as we need to bolster Luck’s line desperately with some blue-chip (even red-chip) talent!
By Jake on Mar 12, 2013 | Reply
I agree with Adrian. Trade for Revis, haha! But on a serious note, I was disappointed that we didn’t get Kruger or Spencer, but think that Avril, Barwin, Grimes, and Amendola would be great for Indy.
By Dan on Mar 12, 2013 | Reply
I agree with a CB….
Even a Wideout if we can catch their interest. Why would you not want to play for this organization?
Expecting a big move soon

Seriously, other than Cherilus, how are any of these guys upgrades? Maybe these are depth guys and there is a bigger plan overall for the real upgrades…

wow… don’t make to big of a splash in free agency…. already let Paul Kruger get by… come on
By Steve on Mar 12, 2013 | Reply
I’m in Michigan right now, and Cherilus is not a quality pick-up. I’m sorry Colts, but you missed on that one. The only way this could work with him is if you’re looking for a veteran to give his experience to the young guys. Putting him on the line will not be beneficial.

I love all you GM’s out there. Most of which have no clue what you are talking about. Just sit back quit complaining and throwing out these names that would never work in this system. Appreciate what you have in this front office and leave it to the professionals. Fill those rosters spots with better players and keep “BUILDING THE MONSTER”

I think Grigs will address CB in the draft. The fact that they have already acquired 2 FAs at LB suggests that they are finding backups with experience in a 3-4 and will likely snag a big fish to anchor the position.
By JD on Mar 12, 2013 | Reply
I trust Grigsons judgement but:
Gosder Cherilus – Has knee problems
and
Erik Walden – Was suspended the first game of last season by the Packers for domestic abuse charges

I think Darelle Revis would be a great fit! And also Greg Jennings! With T.Y Hilton and Reggie Wayne at receiver Adding Jennings would be an astonishing receiving group for the Second year QB. Andrew Luck

These are very good pick ups. Solid improvement on our base already without spending a lot of money…Indy has never went after any huge veteran names because very rarely do those players work out. The two offensive lineman are great pick ups. Everyone wants grimes and other big names but they don’t back up the dollar value.

Well ladies and gentlemen, we wasted money on Gosder Cherilus. You do realize he was a top 20 pick and never lived up to the hype? He’s been injury prone and can’t run block to save his life. I thought we were trying to develop a run game? Sidbury is a waste money. Toler I can’t help but laugh about. This has been a waste so far. Let’s get Avril too and overpay him while we’re at it.
By COLTNATION on Mar 12, 2013 | Reply
Wes Welker would not fit into our system. We already have a good young slot WR in T.Y. Now Greg Jennings would be a huge addition but you people need to realize that the player has to want to come to the organization. This IS NOT Madden ’13 people. Some players that I believe are reachable are Grimes and Avril. They would both add playmaking abilities to our D. Hopefully Grigs will play the FA market harder then Polian did in the past. Im worried about Cherilus though. I know he is better then what we had at RT but Stafford has taking a beating the past couple years. Lets hope we get some good players in the draft. *COLTS NATION*

Would be silly to get a *GOOD* guard right, only have one of the greatest QB prospects since Elway, go ahead and let him run for his life behing a TERRIBLE O-Line. We will end up with Jake Long who will play a total of 6 games this year for them and get paid 9 million to do it.. WOW, grow a pair and do something that matters

Do you think the Indianapolis Colts were desperate for an outside linebacker? I expected Erik Walden to sign with someone other than the Green Bay Packers and I wouldn’t have been too surprised if someone gave him a slight raise, but this? Well … wow.
Yes, that’s four years and $16 million for a serviceable, but never spectacular outside linebacker. That’s … probably an overpay by double, in years and average yearly salary. I don’t blame Walden for having every expectation that he’s going to start, because that’s borderline starter money.
I wish Walden all the best and hopes he lives up to that contract, but I don’t think I’m being rude or disrespectful by saying that he did not do enough in Green Bay for the Packers to ever consider giving him a contract of that size. I knew the outside linebacker market was thin, but this is really something else. I’m stunned.

So many of us are smarter than Grigson. Lots of stats flying around. Here’s a question, how many tackles did Jerrell Freeman have in 2011? Nobody ever heard of him, right? Grigson saw the talent. He turned out to be a beast. Give it time. He certainly knows better than any of us do.
By Nathan on Mar 12, 2013 | Reply
In Grigson and his staff we must trust. I am guessing the signings so far today are low risk, high reward situations. The OT and OG coming in are solid NFL lineman and are upgrades to what is currently on the roster. The Colts have a high quality front office…let them do what they do!
By Tom on Mar 12, 2013 | Reply
Hey,welker would be fantastic but that’s not going to happen,n.e. not going to let him go.we need db’s and safety’s or another interior run stopper. Don’t know much about these guys but have faith in gm and coach.no matter, still will be at least a 10 win season. GO BIG BLUE!!!!!!
By Nathan on Mar 12, 2013 | Reply
Kruger was one of our targets, but Cleveland overpaid for sure. I firmly believe that Grigson has a well thought out plan, not only for free agency, but for the Colts’ draft picks as well. The Colts are a better football team than they were three hours ago without question. I look forward to seeing Grigson’s plan come together this off-season.

So far outside of Cherilus, I don’t think ANY of these players were picked up to be every down starters. The signing that does have me scratching my head though is Greg Toler. You just let go of Jerraud Powers (who is better than Toler) for a player who constantly got burned last year. Rumor has it that LaRon Landry is in Indy taking a physical. We still need help on the O-line though. Don’t wanna see them overpay, but would like to at least see them in the Jake Long sweepstakes.

erik walden is a solid player. he is not bad by no means. we did miss out on the two big guards but i will settle with gosder. this is a decent start to others but to a big colts fan compared to our past free agency history this is a grand start.

Cherilus finally came into his own last season after being disappointing for the beginning of his career. He was ranked the #2 RT and #7 OT by PFF just a couple weeks ago. He’s a good signing, and I’ve seen many positive things about Toler too. He was ranked higher than Cardinals teammate Patrick Peterson as a cover corner, and he’s a lot cheaper than someone like Nnamdi or DRC. Grigson knows what he’s doing. Look what he did last offseason with much less money to work with. Give them some time to bring in other players for visits, and I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised.
By Josh on Mar 12, 2013 | Reply
Thank you! Everyone’s so quick to knock Grigson, but they forgot about how quickly he helped rebuild our team with very little money last offseason. Let the guy do his job.
By Josh on Mar 12, 2013 | Reply
I’d like to see the Colts look at LaRon Landry and Brent Grimes at DB, Brandon Moore at OG, and Cliff Avril at DE/OLB. Obviously they aren’t going to sign all of these guys, but even getting just 1 or 2 of them could really help our team. If I had to guess, I’d say Avril and Landry are the most likely. I trust Grigson to help build our team without going crazy in FA. He’s a smart guy, and I love what he’s done so far.
By cory on Mar 12, 2013 | Reply
you guys keep talking about getting a WR, but forget that we signed that 6-6 receiver. overpaying for all those players is what got us killed in the salary cap before: high contracts on PM, free, marv, etc tied up too much money. Grigs is signing “blue collar” players, not so much big name players that have potential to do great things for Indy. Lets hope they stay safe, and im sure grigs will keep us going in the right directions. GO HORSE!!!
By Levy on Mar 12, 2013 | Reply
Understand that the FA’s that we’ve signed so far, we signed for a reason. The guys we’ve signed weren’t exactly being fought over by other teams. Clearly Grigson has a plan and has done his homework on these guys. Think about it, we signed them within 2 hours of the free agency market opening. Just get excited for next year.

23.35 mil to fit butler, sidbury, thomas and any other free agents…lets say 7 mil per yr for the three (just a guess)…cannot imagine us getting any big names with 14 mil

By Drew on Mar 13, 2013 | Reply
The amount per year doesnt mean that it hits the cap for that much to begin with. People are asking for a wide receiver because Reggie can’t last for ever and Donnie Avery is a free agent so unless they resign him we need more depth unless they believe a guy like Brazil is ready to contribute more.
By Drew on Mar 13, 2013 | Reply
I don’t know why so many of you are asking for big names. Big names = big money and don’t always pan out. We have lots of holes to fill. We need depth at several positions and I see them addressing that with potential for impact players. I’m not saying I wouldn’t get excited over a Greg Jennings or Wes Welker but I don’t see it necessary.
By fatty on Mar 13, 2013 | Reply
you’re right…these are just averages per year, not necessarily the cap hit, but if you get a big name like avril at an average of 8 mil/yr or landry at 6 mil/yr or Jennings 7 mil/yr or grimes 6mil/yr or welker or amendola… im just saying the 43 mil is going fast

Biggest concern in my eyes going in was OL. I think both additions were huge upgrades and the draft is very deep for OL as well. If the OL gets retooled to keep Luck upright, I would call this offseason a win.
