Chuck Pagano talks defending the read-option, the need for T.Y. Hilton and Andrew Luck’s will to win

With the regular season back in action, the Chuck Pagano show returns hosted by ‘Voice of the Colts’ Bob Lamey on Monday nights.

Here’s some of the highlights from Pagano’s show on Monday night:

Pagano on defending the read-option a lot early in the season:

“I’m glad it happened this early in the season. They were going to make some plays. That’s a very, very talented quarterback. It’s a tough scheme to defend so seeing it now is only going to help us down the road. We are going to make the corrections. We are going to be better down the road when we have to face it again. It has to go back to discipline football, being in the right spot, doing your job and we will play better next time we face it.”

On the final drive poise from the Colts:

“I don’t want to be in it. I don’t think any of us do but they certainly understand that if you keep playing hard, you keep giving effort, you take it one-play-at-a-time, there’s going to be plays to be made. Just make sure that you’re playing hard enough and you’re in position so when the play shows up you are there to make it.”

On Andrew Luck in close game situations:

“I guess he’s just a calm, cool, calculated, very talented guy. It’s never too big for him. As long as there is a few ticks left on the clock, whether it’s a minute or a minute and a half and we’ve got a timeout or we don’t have a timeout, he walks in there with such a calmness to him, such a coolness to him that he’s able to look each one of those men in the eye and say, ‘Okay, this is what we are going to do. This is how we are going to go about our business and we are going to take this ball down the field and we are going to score a touchdown, we are going to kick a field goal to win this thing. And everybody believes in him and he’s got the ability and the innate athleticism, the arm talent, all those things to be able to make those types of plays and get us down the field. If he’s going to run it in himself, he’s going to run it. He’s a great, great competitor and he’s got the will to win. ”

On T.Y. Hilton having three catches for 20 yards against the Raiders:

“It doesn’t take much to get him going and we need to get him going earlier in the ball game. We will do that and we’ve talked about that. He’s not one of the guys that will sneak up on you now after the year that he had last year. Everybody is well aware of what he can do and how he can hurt you so they are doing things to take away our playmakers. We will do better to get him involved.”

On the parity in the NFL:

“I kept hearing all week long about, ‘These guys are you guys last year. They’re ranked No. 32 in the Power Rankings.’ I just kept telling our guys, ‘Don’t read anything. Don’t listen to anything. Just go about your business. Get prepared. Come in Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and let’s have a good mock game on Saturday.’

These guys are in the NFL for a reason, players and coaches. If you don’t strap it up and you don’t prepare and you don’t get ready to prepare week-in-and-week-out, it doesn’t matter. It was set up perfectly by everybody and we were eight yards away from this thing going south. Fortunately, our guys had enough fortitude and resiliency with Robert (Mathis) getting the sack and the huge interception by (Antoine) Bethea to pull that thing out.”
