This week’s “Back-Up of the Game” presented by Venyu is inside linebacker Kelvin Sheppard.
When Jerrell Freeman exited the game late in the first half with a concussion, it was time for a little in game “Next Man Up”.
Sheppard played a majority of the second half in Freeman’s absence and had four tackles, including a critical fourth quarter sack of Philip Rivers.
The Colts had cut the lead back down to seven points on an Adam Vinatieri field goal with 7:21 to play.
On the ensuing drive, Sheppard bull-rushed Chargers running back Danny Woodhead and sacked Rivers for a nine-yard loss.
The sack came on a second-and-10 and two plays later the Chargers were punting, giving the Colts one final opportunity to tie the game.
Sheppard was acquired via trade following April’s NFL Draft. He previously started 24 games in two years with the Buffalo Bills.
