The NFL today announced that Indianapolis Colts kicker Adam Vinatieri has been named AFC Special Teams Player of the Week for Week 17. The award is the 15th of Vinatieri’s career and his second this season.

In the Colts’ 30-10 victory over Jacksonville last week, Vinatieri split the uprights on 3-of-3 field goals and three PATs for 12 total points. With his 26-yard field goal as time expired in the second quarter, he became the seventh player in NFL history to reach 2,000 career points. Vinatieri also passed George Blanda (2,002) and Matt Stover (2,004) for the fifth-most points scored in NFL history.

Vinatieri finished the season with 139 points, which is the second-highest single-season point total of his career (141 in 2004) and third-highest point total in Colts history, passing Cary Blanchard’s 135 in 1996. With 35 made field goals, he set a career-high and moved into sole possession of third place for the most field goals made in a single season in franchise history. Vinatieri also improved his streak of consecutive games having scored at least one point to 161.

The award marks the second straight week the Colts have earned AFC Player of the Week honors. Overall, the Colts have earned five AFC Player of the Week/Month awards this season.
