The Indianapolis Colts today waived the following 17 players: DE-Gannon Conway, RB-David Fluellen, QB-Chandler Harnish, DE-Tyler Hoover, OLB-Phillip Hunt, ILB-Andrew Jackson, WR-Ryan Lankford, WR-Josh Lenz, C-FN Lutz, S-Dewey McDonald, DT-Nnamdi Obukwelu, CB-Sheldon Price, ILB-Rob Ruggiero, TE-Weslye Saunders, ILB-Kelvin Sheppard, TE-Erik Swoope and G-Josh Walker.
The team released NT-Brandon McKinney, waived-injured T-Matt Hall and S-Delano Howell and placed OLB-Robert Mathis on the Reserve/Suspended by Commissioner list. If Hall and Howell clear waivers, they will revert to the team’s Injured Reserve list.
Conway was signed by the Colts as a free agent on June 11, 2014, was waived on July 16 and was signed back to the team on August 11. He was originally signed by the Miami Dolphins as an undrafted free agent on May 13, 2014. In 30 career games (14 starts) at Arizona State, Conway recorded 51 tackles (33 solo), nine tackles for loss, 5.5 sacks and two passes defensed.
Fluellen was acquired by the Colts in a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles on August 20, 2014. He was a two-time First Team All-MAC honoree from the University of Toledo and finished fourth in team history with 3,336 rushing yards. As a senior in 2013, Fluellen led the team in rushing with 1,121 yards and 10 touchdowns.
Harnish was originally selected by the Colts in the seventh round (253rd overall) of the 2012 NFL Draft out of Northern Illinois University. He has spent the past two seasons (2012-13) on the team’s practice squad.
Hoover was signed by the Colts as an undrafted free agent on May 13, 2014. He played in 48 career games (23 starts) at Michigan State and recorded 93 tackles, nine tackles for loss, 7.5 sacks, six passes defensed, three forced fumbles and one fumble recovery.
Hunt was signed by the Colts as a free agent on August 5, 2014. He played in 22 career games with the Philadelphia Eagles from 2011-12, recording 15 tackles (14 solo) and 3.0 sacks. Hunt spent the 2013 season on Injured Reserve after suffering an injury in the preseason.
Jackson was selected by the Colts in the sixth round (203rd overall) of the 2014 NFL Draft. He finished his collegiate career at Western Kentucky with 326 tackles (174 solo), 6.5 sacks, 43 tackles for loss, one interception, five forced fumbles, one fumble recovery and four passes defensed in 37 games played (33 starts).
Lankford was signed by the Colts as a free agent on May 19, 2014. He completed his collegiate career at Illinois with 70 receptions for 1,014 yards and seven touchdowns in 43 games played. As a junior in 2012, Lankford led the team in receiving yards (469), receiving touchdowns (five) and total points scored (30), while finishing second in receptions (37).
Lenz was signed to the Colts practice squad on November 11, 2013 and was elevated to the active roster on January 6, 2014. He was originally signed by the Chicago Bears as an undrafted free agent on April 28, 2013 and spent time on the Seattle Seahawks practice squad before joining the Colts.
Lutz was signed by the Colts as an undrafted free agent on June 3, 2014. He started 42-of-44 career games at Indiana State University. Lutz started all 12 games at center for the Sycamores in 2013 and all 11 games in 2011.
McDonald was signed by the Colts as an undrafted free agent on May 12, 2014. He transferred to California University of Pennsylvania from Fairmont State. McDonald finished his career with the second-most career interception return yards (475) among active Division II players.
Obukwelu was signed by the Colts as an undrafted free agent on May 13, 2014. He played in 39 games at Harvard and registered 109 tackles, 21 tackles for loss, 9.0 sacks, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.
Price was originally signed by the Colts as an undrafted free agent on April 30, 2013. He was inactive for the team’s regular season finale and both postseason games in 2013. Price competed in 47 games (45 starts) at UCLA and totaled 157 tackles (123 solo), five interceptions, two forced fumbles and 21 passes defensed.
Ruggiero was signed by the Colts as a free agent on August 21, 2014. He was a tryout player during the Colts rookie mini-camp this past May. As a senior at Bridgewater State University last year, Ruggiero was named the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year after totaling 44 tackles and 23.0 tackles for loss.
Saunders was originally signed by the Colts as a free agent on October 16, 2012. Over the past two seasons (2012-13) with the team, he totaled six receptions for 61 yards in 17 games played (five starts). Saunders entered the league as an undrafted free agent with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2011.
Sheppard was acquired by the Colts in a trade with the Buffalo Bills on April 29, 2013. Last season, he recorded 62 tackles (38 solo), 1.0 sack, one pass defensed and one special teams stop in 15 games (seven starts). For his career, Sheppard has posted totals of 200 tackles (133 solo), 3.0 sacks, three passes defensed, one fumble recovery and 15 special teams stops.
Swoope was signed by the Colts as an undrafted free agent on May 13, 2014. He was a four-year standout on the University of Miami basketball team where he started 27-of-110 games and totaled 291 career points, 186 rebounds, 37 steals, 31 assists and 25 blocks in 1,190 minutes.
Walker was signed by the Colts as an undrafted free agent on May 12, 2014. He was an All-Conference USA selection in 2013 at Middle Tennessee State and never missed a game throughout his collegiate career. As a junior in 2012, he earned honorable mention All-Sun Belt Conference (SBC), Third Team All-SBC by CollegeSportsMadness.com and Second Team All-SBC by Phil Steele.
McKinney was signed by the Colts as a free agent on June 19, 2014. He has appeared in 61 career regular season games (six starts), totaling 82 tackles (42 solo), two passes defensed, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery. McKinney also has recorded nine tackles (five solo), one pass defensed and one fumble recovery in seven postseason contests.
Hall was signed by the Colts as a free agent on July 28, 2014. He was originally signed by the Minnesota Vikings as an undrafted free agent on May 10, 2014 and was waived on July 25. In 2013, Hall was named to the AFCA NAIA All-America First Team and was a Mid-South First Team All-Conference West Division selection at Belhaven University.
Howell played in six games (three starts) in 2013 and totaled 24 tackles (14 solo) and one pass defensed. He also recorded a special teams stop and returned a blocked field goal recovery 61 yards for a touchdown against Seattle (10/6/13). Howell was signed to the Colts active roster from the Buffalo Bills practice squad on November 28, 2012.
Mathis, a six-time Pro Bowl selection, is the Colts’ all-time career and single-season sack leader. In 2013, he was voted an Associated Press and Sporting News First Team NFL All-Pro selection for the first time in his career after leading the league in sacks (19.5). For his career, Mathis has totaled 555 tackles (419 solo), 111.0 sacks, 48 forced fumbles, 14 fumble recoveries, 18 passes defensed and one interception in 163 games played (99 starts).
