The Indianapolis Colts today signed two free agents to the active roster: outside linebacker Chris Carter and running back Dion Lewis. The team also signed quarterback Dominique Davis to the practice squad and waived running back Zurlon Tipton.
Carter, 6-1, 248 pounds, has played in 29 games (four starts) with the Pittsburgh Steelers over the past three seasons (2011-13) since being selected by the team in the fifth round (162nd overall) of the 2011 NFL Draft out of Fresno State. He holds career totals of eight tackles (four solo), one fumble recovery and nine special teams stops. In 2013, Carter registered career highs of 13 games played (one start) and five special teams tackles.
Lewis, 5-8, 195 pounds, was originally selected by the Philadelphia Eagles in the fifth round (149th overall) of the 2011 NFL Draft. In two seasons with the Eagles (2011-12), he competed in 24 games and totaled 36 carries for 171 yards (4.8 avg.) and two touchdowns while adding three receptions for 21 yards. Lewis also served as Philadelphia’s kickoff returner and compiled 32 returns for 702 yards (21.9 avg.). He posted his best game on January 1, 2012 when he recorded 12 carries for 58 yards and one touchdown. Lewis was traded to the Cleveland Browns on April 11, 2013. The Browns then released Lewis on August 30, 2014.
Davis, 6-3, 210 pounds, appeared in one game with the Atlanta Falcons in 2013 and completed 5-of-7 passes (71.4%) for 34 yards and an 81.8 passer rating. He was originally signed by the Falcons as an undrafted free agent out of East Carolina University on April 30, 2012. Davis completed his two-year career at East Carolina completing 727-of-1,103 passes for 7,192 yards and 62 touchdowns, while adding 172 rushing attempts for 313 yards and 14 touchdowns.
Tipton was signed by the Colts as an undrafted free agent on May 13, 2014. He finished his career at Central Michigan with the fourth-most career rushing touchdowns (34) in school history. As a senior, he rushed for 398 yards and eight touchdowns on 74 attempts.
