The Indianapolis Colts today signed free agent cornerback Jalil Brown to the active roster and signed wide receiver Chandler Jones and inside linebacker Rob Ruggiero to the practice squad. The team also extended the contract of outside linebacker Robert Mathis an additional year through the 2016 season.
Brown, 6-1, 207 pounds, has played in 34 games (two starts) and has registered career totals of 24 tackles (all solo), two passes defensed, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery. He played in five games with the Colts in 2013 and recorded two solo tackles. In 2012 with the Kansas City Chiefs, Brown posted career highs in games played (15), games started (two), tackles (20), passes defensed (two) and forced fumbles (one). He was originally selected by the Chiefs in the fourth round (118th overall) of the 2011 NFL Draft out of the University of Colorado.
Jones, 5-9, 185 pounds, was originally signed by the Cleveland Browns as an undrafted free agent on May 12, 2014 and was waived on August 4. He set career records at San Jose State for receptions (248), receiving yards (3,087) and touchdown receptions (29) and became the first player in school history to record at least 50 receptions in all four years. Jones posted 10 career 100-yard receiving games and became the second player in NCAA history to score a rushing, receiving and fumble-return touchdown in the same game. In 2013, he set a school record with 15 touchdown receptions and ranked 10th in the FBS with 1,356 receiving yards.
Ruggiero, 6-2, 245 pounds, was originally signed by the Colts as a free agent on August 21, 2014 and was waived on August 30. He was also a tryout player during the Colts rookie mini-camp this past May. As a senior at Bridgewater State University in 2013, Ruggiero was named the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year after totaling 44 tackles and 23.0 tackles for loss. He also participated in the 2013 All American Bowl and earned the Jim Marshall Award as the top defensive lineman. He transferred to BSU following three years at Springfield College and in four collegiate seasons, compiled career totals of 47.5 tackles for loss and 22.0 sacks.
