The Indianapolis Colts today made a qualifying offer to restricted free agent ILB-Jerrell Freeman and made exclusive rights tenders to OLB-Daniel Adongo, RB-Daniel “Boom” Herron and OLB-Cam Johnson.
Freeman was originally signed by the Colts to a reserve/future contract on January 19, 2012. Over the past three seasons (2012-14), he topped 100 tackles each year, recording career totals of 516 tackles (305 solo), 15 passes defensed, 9.0 sacks, eight forced fumbles, three interceptions, including one returned for a touchdown, and two fumble recoveries in 44 starts. He also contributed with 67 tackles (43 solo), 1.5 sacks, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery and one pass defensed in six postseason contests (five starts).
In 2013, Freeman was named to the USA Today All-Joe Team after leading the team in tackles and setting a record for the most forced fumbles (six) in a single season by a Colts undrafted player. As a rookie in 2012, he set a single-season franchise mark and ranked fifth in the NFL with 203 total tackles.
Adongo was signed by the Colts as a free agent on July 25, 2013. Last season, he was placed on Injured Reserve on August 12, 2014. In 2013, Adongo spent the first 12 games of the season on the practice squad before being signed to the active roster and playing in two games on special teams. Prior to joining the Colts, he played for the Southern Kings of Super 15 Rugby in 2013, which is the highest level of professional rugby in the world.
Herron recorded 83 rushes for 384 yards (4.6 avg.) and a touchdown, as well as 22 receptions for 230 yards in 22 regular season games (three starts) since being signed by the Colts from the Cincinnati Bengals practice squad on October 9, 2013. He also contributed with 10 special teams tackles over the past two seasons. In 2014, Herron played in all 16 games (three starts) and totaled 351 rushing yards, including a 49-yard touchdown, on 78 carries (4.5 avg.) and 173 receiving yards on 21 receptions. Herron started all three postseason contests, where he posted the most receiving yards (128) by a running back in a single postseason in team history.
Johnson was acquired by the Colts in a trade with the San Francisco 49ers on September 2, 2013. Last season, he played in one game before being placed on Injured Reserve on September 9, 2014. Johnson saw action in 12 games in 2013 and recorded two tackles on defense and five on special teams. He also added three special teams stops in two postseason contests. In 2012, Johnson spent the first 14 games of the season on the 49ers practice squad before competing in the final two regular season games.
