The Indianapolis Colts today announced that restricted free agent inside linebacker Jerrell Freeman has signed his qualifying offer.
Freeman, 6-0, 240 pounds, was originally signed by the Colts to a reserve/future contract on January 19, 2012. In three seasons (44 games), he has totaled 516 tackles, 9.0 sacks, eight forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, three interceptions and 15 passes defensed.
Last season, Freeman ranked second on the team with 144 tackles (78 solo) while contributing with 1.5 sacks, one forced fumble and six passes defensed. He led the team in tackles for eight games and posted double-digit stops in 11 contests. Freeman tied his season-high of 14 tackles on four occasions, including a Week 1 game at Denver where he added a forced fumble.
Freeman led the Colts in tackles in 2012 and 2013. He set the single-season franchise record for the most forced fumbles by a Colts undrafted player with six in 2013. That season, Freeman earned AFC Defensive Player of the Week honors following his 1.0 sack and two-takeaway performance at Kansas City. He was also named to the 2013 USA Today All-Joe Team.
In 2012, Freeman set a franchise record and ranked fifth in the NFL for tackles in a season with 203. He became only the second Colts defender in franchise history to top 200 tackles in a year. That season, he also became the first undrafted player to return an interception for a touchdown in his NFL debut since 1987 when he picked off Jay Cutler and returned the ball four yards for a score in the regular season opener at Chicago.
In six postseason contests, Freeman has started in five games and has recorded 67 tackles, 1.5 sacks, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery and one pass defensed.
