The Indianapolis Colts today signed undrafted free agent inside linebacker Justin Shirk and waived defensive end Camaron Beard.
Shirk, 6-0, 243 pounds, played in 45 games over his four-year career (2011-14) at Bloomsburg and finished with 392 tackles, 45.0 tackles for loss, 18.0 sacks, five forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and one interception. He earned conference honors in each of his four collegiate seasons as he was named First Team All-PSAC East twice (2014 and 2013) and Second Team All-PSAC East twice (2012 and 2011). Additionally, Shirk was named PSAC Defensive Player of the Week six times.
He played in all 12 games as a senior team captain in 2014 and totaled 120 tackles, 21.5 tackles for loss, 11 sacks, two forced fumbles and one interception. Shirk was named 2014 AP Second Team Little All-America, 2014 Super Region 1 Defensive Player of the Year and was a 2014 Cliff Harris Award Finalist (awarded to the small college Defensive Player of the Year). In 2013, he appeared in 12 games and registered 123 tackles, 8.0 tackles for loss, 3.0 sacks and one forced fumble. Shirk saw action in 11 games as a sophomore and had 93 tackles, 9.0 tackles for loss, 2.0 sacks, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery. He played in 10 games in his first season at Bloomsburg and tallied 56 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss, 2.0 sacks and one fumble recovery.
Shirk was also a standout collegiate track and field performer. Prior to Bloomsburg, he attended the University of Oklahoma and as a freshman in 2010, finished fourth overall in the Big XII in the javelin throw. After transferring to Bloomsburg, Shirk participated in one season of track and field for the Huskies and won the 2012 DII National Championship in the javelin throw.
Beard, 6-5, 290 pounds, originally signed with the Colts as an undrafted free agent on June 2, 2015. He played in 41 games at Cincinnati and finished with 75 tackles, 8.5 tackles for loss and 2.0 sacks.
