BUFFALO – The Colts 2015 campaign did not get off to an ideal start in a 27-14 loss to the Bills.
After struggling to finish off some early drives, a stretch late in the first half caused things to snowball away from the visitors.
The Colts (0-1) will return to work this week to prepare for their regular season home opener next Monday against the Jets (1-0).
Here are FIVE THINGS LEARNED.
HANDLING THE PRESSURE – Rex Ryan’s pressure got the best of the Colts offense on Sunday afternoon. Promising drives for the Colts hit road blocks with untimely penalties and hits on Andrew Luck spelled doom for the visitors on Sunday. The Colts will see a similar defensive scheme this weekend after the Jets recorded three sacks in Week One.
LACK OF FIELD POSITION – It’s the most important stat to the Colts special teams units. On Sunday, the field position control, an area the Colts typically have in their favor, played a major role in success for the Bills. The Colts average field position start was their own 19-yard line. By contrast, the Bills started on their own 35-yard line.
VONTAE DAVIS’ NEW ROLE – One of the bright spots from Sunday came from how Vontae Davis played. In a new “shadow” type role, Davis held Bills wide receiver Sammy Watkins to zero catches and just three targets. It was another outstanding performance from Davis and now gives the Colts a defensive wrinkle to potentially use throughout the 2015 season.
HILTON INJURY WATCH – Colts Nation held their breath when T.Y. Hilton walked into the locker room near the end of the third quarter. X-rays are negative on Hilton’s left knee and the early reports have him missing a few weeks with a bad bruise.
TIME TO RE-GROUP – The Colts will have an extra day of preparation this week before their home opener on Monday Night Football against the Jets. Following the Jets, the Colts will play their three AFC South opponents in the next three weeks. There’s certainly an opportunity to stack some wins together before the slate gets much, much tougher in October/November.
