The Indianapolis Colts today elevated safety Dewey McDonald to the 53-man roster from the practice squad and waived inside linebacker Amarlo Herrera and cornerback Shaun Prater. The team also released quarterback Alex Tanney from the practice squad.
McDonald, 6-0, 220 pounds, was signed to the Colts practice squad on September 6. He saw action in 12 games for Indianapolis as a rookie in 2014 and finished second on the team with 13 special teams tackles. McDonald also saw action in all three postseason contests for the Colts and registered three special teams tackles.
Herrera, 6-1, 249 pounds, spent Weeks 1-5 on the Colts practice squad before being elevated to the 53-man roster on October 17. Herrera was selected by the Colts in the sixth round (207th overall) of the 2015 NFL Draft. He started 43-of-54 games at Georgia and totaled 334 tackles (147 solo), 21.0 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, four forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, 11 passes defensed and three interceptions.
Prater, 5-10, 190 pounds, was signed by the Colts as a free agent on October 5. He played in the Colts Week 5 win vs. the Houston Texans. Prater has seen action in 20 career NFL games (three starts) and registered six tackles, seven passes defensed, one interception and five special teams tackles with Indianapolis, Minnesota and Philadelphia. He was originally selected by the Cincinnati Bengals in the fifth round (156th overall) of the 2012 NFL Draft.
Tanney, 6-4, 220 pounds, was signed to the team’s practice squad on September 29. He has spent time with the Buffalo Bills, Tennessee Titans, Cleveland Browns, Dallas Cowboys and Kansas City Chiefs. He originally signed with the Kansas City Chiefs as an undrafted free agent on June 5, 2012.
