The Indianapolis Colts today agreed to terms with free agent outside linebacker Akeem Ayers and waived cornerback Neiko Thorpe.
The team also signed cornerback Frankie Williams to the practice squad.
Ayers, 6-3, 255 pounds, has played in 75 career NFL games (57 starts) and totaled 337 tackles (249 solo), 13.5 sacks, three interceptions, 20 passes defensed, four forced fumbles, four fumble recoveries and 11 special teams stops in his time with the St. Louis Rams (2015), New England Patriots (2014) and Tennessee Titans (2011-14). He has seen action in three postseason contests and tallied two special teams tackles. Ayers participated in the Los Angeles Rams offseason program and training camp before being released during final cuts on September 3, 2016.
In 2015, Ayers played in all 16 games (10 starts) and compiled 68 tackles (48 solo), 0.5 sacks, five passes defensed, one forced fumble and three fumble recoveries. He appeared in two games for the Titans in 2014 and registered three special teams stops before being traded to the Patriots midseason. In New England in 2014, Ayers saw action in nine games (four starts) and tallied 15 tackles (12 solo), 4.0 sacks, one interception, one pass defensed and three special teams stops. He made his postseason debut with the Patriots and made two special teams tackles in three contests. From 2011-13, Ayers started 44-of-48 games for the Titans and totaled 254 tackles (189 solo), 9.0 sacks, two interceptions, 14 passes defensed, three forced fumbles, one fumble recovery and five special teams stops. He was originally selected by Tennessee in the second round (39th overall) of the 2011 NFL Draft out of UCLA.
Thorpe, 6-1, 200 pounds, signed with the Colts as a free agent on September 4, 2016. He has played in 37 career NFL games (two starts) and totaled 42 tackles (38 solo), one interception, seven passes defensed and 10 special teams stops in his time with the Oakland Raiders (2014-15) and Kansas City Chiefs (2012).
Williams, 5-9, 190 pounds, participated in the Colts offseason program and training camp before being waived on September 5, 2016. He originally signed with the Colts as an undrafted free agent on May 7, 2016. Williams played in 48 games (38 starts) at Purdue and totaled 227 tackles (163 solo), 5.5 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, two fumble recoveries, one forced fumble, 36 passes defensed, 10 interceptions (one returned for a touchdown) and one blocked kick. He also contributed on special teams with 32 punt returns for 334 yards and 22 kickoff returns for 505 yards.
