INDIANAPOLIS COLTS SIGN G-JACK MEWHORT

The Indianapolis Colts today signed guard Jack Mewhort.

Mewhort was selected by the Colts with their first pick in the second round (59th overall) of the 2014 NFL Draft. Mewhort competed in 49 career games at Ohio State University, making 39 consecutive starts to close his collegiate career. He lined up at left tackle for a combined 26 starts as a junior and senior while adding five starts at left guard and eight more at right guard his sophomore season.

As a senior in 2013, Mewhort served as a team captain and was part of a Buckeye offense that set school records for the most points scored (637), rushing yards (4,321) and total touchdowns (83). He was a consensus All-America selection and added second-team accolades from Walter Camp, The NFL Draft Report, The Associated Press, CBSSports.com, Sports Illustrated and the Football Writers Association in addition to being a first-team choice by ESPN. Mewhort was named a First Team All-Big Ten Conference choice and was a candidate for the Outland Trophy.

INDIANAPOLIS COLTS SIGN ILB-ANDREW JACKSON

The Indianapolis Colts today signed inside linebacker Andrew Jackson.

Jackson was selected by the Colts in the sixth round (203rd overall) of the 2014 NFL Draft. Jackson appeared in 37 career games (33 starts) at Western Kentucky University and recorded 326 tackles (174 solo), 6.5 sacks, 43.0 tackles for loss, one interception, five forced fumbles, one fumble recovery and four passes defensed. He became the 10th player in school history to record at least 300 career tackles and his total ranked 14th among active NCAA FBS players.

Jackson competed in the 2014 East-West Shrine Game and earned All-Sun Belt Conference first-team honors in two consecutive seasons (2011 and 2012). In 2012, he tallied 122 total tackles, which ranks first for a WKU player during the school’s Football Bowl Subdivision era (since 2009). As a senior in 2013, Jackson earned All-Sun Belt Conference second-team accolades after competing in 11 games (nine starts) and finishing the season ranked second on the team with 95 tackles, in addition to 1.0 sack, 8.5 tackles for loss and two passes defensed.

INDIANAPOLIS COLTS SIGN T-ULRICK JOHN

The Indianapolis Colts today signed tackle Ulrick John.

John was selected by the Colts with their final pick in the seventh round (232nd overall) of the 2014 NFL Draft. John competed in 36 collegiate contests (25 starts) at Georgia State and was the school’s top lineman over the last two seasons (2012-13). He was a two-year starter at left tackle, but also logged starts at center and guard earlier in his career with the Panthers.

As a senior in 2013, John started 11 games at left tackle and was named an All-Sun Belt Conference honorable mention selection. In 2012, he started 10-of-11 games at left tackle and blocked for a Panthers offense that registered 110.5 rushing yards per game.

INDIANAPOLIS COLTS SIGN OLB-JONATHAN NEWSOME

The Indianapolis Colts today signed outside linebacker Jonathan Newsome.

Newsome was selected by the Colts in the fifth round (166th overall) of the 2014 NFL Draft. In two seasons at Ball State, he competed in 23 games and totaled 116 tackles, 16.5 sacks, 24.0 tackles for loss, one interception, two forced fumbles and three passes defensed. He spent the 2009 and 2010 seasons at Ohio State and participated in 18 games, playing primarily on special teams.

As a senior in 2013, Newsome was an All-Mid-American Conference (MAC) first-team choice, a three-time MAC West Division Defensive Player of the Week and was named to the Rotary Lombardi Award and Ted Hendricks Award Preseason Watch Lists. For the year, he started all 12 games and totaled 64 tackles, 8.0 sacks, 11.5 tackles for loss, one interception, two forced fumbles and two passes defensed. In 2012, Newsome earned All-MAC Conference second-team accolades after starting 10-of-11 games, including the Beef ‘O’ Brady’s Bowl, and finishing with 52 tackles, 8.5 sacks, 12.5 tackles for loss and one pass defensed.
