2013 OFFSEASON OUTLOOK: HOUSTON TEXANS

Posted by Kevin Bowen on April 10, 2013 – 9:10 am

Between now and the beginning of the 2013 NFL Draft (April 25), Colts.com will take an offseason look at each of the Colts 2013 opponents. The first installment comes today with the AFC South Champion Houston Texans:

Houston Texans Off-Season

2012 Season: 12-4 regular season and captured the AFC South. Lost in the AFC Divisional Round to the New England Patriots, 41-28.

Key Offseason Additions: P-Donnie Jones, FB-Greg Jones, S-Ed Reed

Key Offseason Subtractions: LB-Connor Barwin (Eagles), TE-James Casey (Eagles), S-Glover Quin (Lions) and WR-Kevin Walter (Titans).

2013 Draft Picks: 1-27, 2-57, 3-89, 3-95, 4-124, 5-160, 6-195, 7-201, 7-233

Analysis: The Texans rattled off 12 wins in their first 14 games in 2012 before dropping their final two contests. For the second straight year, Houston captured the AFC South and won its AFC Wild Card contest against the Cincinnati Bengals. The Texans traveled to New England for the Divisional Round and dropped a 41-28 contest to the Patriots.

Houston has itself as the team to beat in the AFC South, with the next step being a trip to at least the AFC Championship game. The Texans return many of the key cogs on one of the league’s most balanced offenses. Fullback Greg Jones will bring a physical presence in front of Pro Bowl running back Arian Foster. Many mock drafts have the Texans looking for a wide receiver in the first round. Pro Bowl wide receiver Andre Johnson is the go-to-guy for quarterback Matt Schaub but finding a complement on the other side is vital this offseason, with the Texans air attack losing a pair of threats in Casey and Walter.

Defensively, the Texans lost a few bodies at the linebacker position but the Texans add one of the league’s all-time greatest safeties in Ed Reed. At the age of 34, Reed brings Super Bowl leadership to a team that is looking for postseason success.
