The thought of a 300-pound NFL offensive linemanswinging a golf club is certainly not one that will invoke thoughts of gracefulness or perfection. However, the 2012 Colts rookie class took to the Golf Club of Indiana in Zionsville on Monday to prove that NFL players, no matter how big, can hold their own on the golf course.
For many of the players, Monday marked the first time that any had taken an interest in the game of golf.Steven Baker was one of many who had very little experience with the sport, but developed an interest in the game after getting a small taste.
“Honestly, I took a lesson yesterday. I’ve got a friend who took me out. We went out on the golf course and I learned the basics,” said Baker of any prior golf experience. “Golf is surprisingly a lot more fun than it looks on TV. It is something fun to do, especially with the guys.”
Similar to Baker, the extent of Andrew Luck’s golf experience was limited, but that did not stop the first overall selection in the 2012 NFL Draft from showing off his natural athletic ability. Within a few shots of arriving at the course Luck lined-up an attempt from 20 feet away and sunk it straight into the hole after striking the middle of the flagstick.
“I was lucky,” said Luck. “I am not going to act like I was trying to bounce it in off the flagpole. But it happened, and I will definitely take it.”
Luck’s abilities on the football field are undeniable, and for a beginning golfer his talent and athleticismproved to translate onto the golf course immediately. Now, with a little bit more time on his hands, he hopes to work on honing his leisure activity skills.
“Absolutely. It is a lot of fun,” said Luck about the prospect of playing more golf. “Hopefully I can fit it in and try to get better and learn a new craft.”
With the conclusion of Monday’s golf outing, the Colts rookies will have one more day until they are finished with offseason workouts until training camp. Baker will use his time away from football to return home and visit with family before the grind of his first NFL season begins.
“I am going back home, because I’ve got a family and a little boy,” said Baker. “So I am going back home to see my son. I will train back at home, but probably try to come back to Indianapolis a little bit early.”
