KANSAS CITY CHIEFS OFFSEASON OUTLOOK
Posted by on – 8:00 amBetween now and the beginning of the NFL Draft (April 25), Colts.com will take an offseason look at each of the Colts 2013 opponents. The ninth installment comes today with the Kansas City Chiefs:
Kansas City Chiefs 2013 Offseason:
2012 Season: 2-14 regular season. Finished 4th in the AFC West
Key Offseason Additions: WR-Donnie Avery, DE-Mike DeVito, TE-Anthony Fasano, CB-Dunta Robinson, G-Geoff Schwartz QB-Alex Smith, CB-Sean Smith
Key Offseason Losses: QB-Matt Cassel (Vikings), RB-Peyton Hillis, OG-Ryan Lilja, QB-Brady Quinn (Seahawks)
2013 Draft Picks: 1-12, 2-42, 2-54, 3-77, 3-82, 4-111, 5-146, 5-166, 7-217, 7-224, 7-250
Analysis: Simply put, expectations were not met in Kansas City this past season and with that, Andy Reid enters the fold as head coach. Reid inherits the No. 1 pick and numerous mock drafts have the Chiefs selecting tackle Luke Joeckel or Eric Fisher on Thursday.
The biggest news of the Chiefs offseason surrounds the quarterback position where Cassel and Quinn depart. In comes Alex Smith and Daniel, with the former expected to become the starter. Smith had a very productive 2012 season as a starting quarterback but an injury to the former 49ers signal caller spelled the end of his career in the Bay Area.
The re-signing of Dwayne Bowe gives Smith an established No. 1 receiver and now Avery and Fasasno, along with returnee Jonathan Baldwin, gives the Chiefs some playmakers. The defense gains a veteran presence up front with DeVito coming over from the New York Jets. Robinson and Sean Smith are two veterans that are needed in the AFC West where Denver’s air attack remains the top in the division.
