Colts offensive guard Joe Reitz no stranger to competition

Competition is something Joe Reitz more than welcomes.

Whether it’s on the hardwood playing for the 2004 Indiana All-Stars or fighting for a roster spot in the NFL, Reitz has relished any opportunity that he’s earned.

The next form of competition for the Fishers, Ind. native will come over the next month and a half when he enters an offensive line battle that is surely to be one to watch at Colts training camp.

“I think competition is something that brings out the best in everybody,” Reitz said last Wednesday on “The Dan Dakich Show” on 1070 AM. “It’s always done that for me, whether it’s been high school or college or the NFL. Also, I know it’s going to make me be the best player I can be.”temp2013_0613_Vet_Mini_Camp_0805--nfl_mezz_1280_1024

Reitz has started 17 games for the Colts over the last two seasons and has found a niche in the NFL as a versatile, athletic lineman.

He’s in the process of fighting to maintain a spot on an offensive line that has added a mix of veteran and young pieces this offseason.

“I know that last year at times we didn’t do as good of a job as we needed to but I think our offensive line as a whole has a great attitude about them,” Reitz said. “We really got after it (this offseason) and we added some new guys into the mix who are going to help us.”

“The bottom line is that we’ve got playmakers on offense. We’ve got No. 12 back there who can pick people apart. Our job as offensive linemen is we have to block for (Luck) and protect him.”

Coming off an 11-5 campaign, Reitz knows that expectations from those on the outside will be higher in 2013.

Many wonder if the emotional 2012 season will wear off this season but Reitz quickly debunks that when discussing the man leading the Horseshoe.

“When you talk about enthusiasm, Coach (Pagano) brings it every day. He’s one of the most enthusiastic guys I’ve ever been around. He’s got just as much (enthusiasm), if not more, than he had last year because we all tasted that success last year,” Reitz said.

“I think when you get that close like we did, into the playoffs, into the dance, it just makes you want it that much more.”
