With the Titans falling to the Broncos 51-28 on Sunday afternoon, the Colts have won the AFC South and a playoff berth for the 2013 season.
The No. 1 line on Chuck Pagano’s preseason goal sheet has been achieved.
The AFC South Championship is the first for the Colts since the 2010 season and the eighth overall since 2002.
By capturing the South, the Colts have guaranteed themselves a top four seed in the AFC Playoffs and at least one home game in January.
It’s the Colts 14th division title in franchise history (6-AFC East, 8-AFC South).
How the top four seeds and home field advantage for the playoffs breakdown remains to be seen with three weeks left in the regular season.
As of now…
1. Denver (11-2)
2. New England (10-3)
3. Cincinnati (9-4)
4. Indianapolis (8-5)
5. Kansas City (10-3)
6. Baltimore (7-6)
Because the Titans game did not kickoff until 4:05 p.m. EST on Sunday, the Colts players and coaches could not comment on winning the AFC South.
This is what Chuck Pagano had to say on the possibility of clinching the division.
“We came down here to… When you have an opportunity to control your own destiny, that’s what we wanted to do — get in because we won. But these guys have done a lot of great things to get to the point that we’re at, regardless. Winning the division is the easiest way, obviously, to get in and give yourself a chance. We’ve got some things to clean up, but we certainly came down here with the mindset that we wanted to win this football game and certainly win the division that way.”
