The Indianapolis Colts today signed free agent outside linebacker Victor Butler to the active roster and waived outside linebacker Chris Carter.
Butler, 6-2, 245 pounds, appeared in 63 career games (two starts) for the Dallas Cowboys from 2009-2012 and totaled 65 tackles (48 solo), 11.0 sacks, five passes defensed, three forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and 40 special teams tackles. He joined the New Orleans Saints in 2013 and spent the entire season on the Reserve/Physically Unable to Perform list. In 2012, Butler set career highs with 23 tackles and three passes defensed, while tying a career-high with 3.0 sacks. In 2011, he also posted 3.0 sacks and a career-best 14 special teams tackles. Butler was originally selected by the Cowboys in the fourth round (110th overall) of the 2009 NFL Draft out of Oregon State.
Carter was signed by the Colts as a free agent on September 10, 2014 and played in one game this season. He has competed in 30 games (four starts) with the Colts (2014) and Pittsburgh Steelers (2011-13) over the past four seasons and holds career totals of eight tackles (four solo), one fumble recovery and nine special teams stops. He was originally selected by the Steelers in the fifth round (162nd overall) of the 2011 NFL Draft out of Fresno State.
