The NFL today announced that Indianapolis Colts cornerback Darius Butler has been named the AFC Defensive Player of the Week for Week 9. This marks the second time he has earned the award in his career as he won the honor in Week 10 of the 2012 season.
In the Colts 27-24 victory over the Denver Broncos, Butler registered two tackles, one interception and one pass defensed. Late in the fourth quarter, Indianapolis took a 27-24 lead with 6:13 left in the game. After a 41-yard kickoff return, the Broncos started their ensuing drive on their own 33-yard line. On the first play of the series, Butler intercepted Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning on a diving catch. The turnover gave the ball back to the Indianapolis offense to run out the clock and secure the win.
Butler is the second Colts player to earn AFC Defensive Player of the Week honors this season, joining safety Mike Adams, who earned the award in Week 5. Punter Pat McAfee was named AFC Special Teams Player of the Week for Week 3.
