The Indianapolis Colts today claimed safety Akeem Davis off waivers.
The team also signed inside linebacker Amarlo Herrera to the practice squad and released linebacker Edwin Jackson from the practice squad.
Davis, 6-1, 200 pounds, was waived by the Seattle Seahawks on December 15 after signing with the team as a free agent on December 9. He played in Seattle’s Week 14 contest at Baltimore. This season Davis has spent time on the active roster and practice squad for the New Orleans Saints and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers practice squad. Davis played in two games (Weeks 7-8) with the Saints and registered two special teams tackles and forced one fumble on special teams. He has seen action in 16 career NFL games and tallied one tackle, two special teams tackles and one special teams forced fumble. Davis originally signed with the Washington Redskins as an undrafted free agent on April 10, 2014.
Collegiately, Davis started 27-of-34 games at Memphis (2008-2012) and was a two-time team captain. He totaled 162 career tackles, 13.0 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, three interceptions, five forced fumbles and seven fumble recoveries. As a senior in 2012, Davis started all 12 games and tallied 68 tackles (37 solo), as Memphis led Conference USA in total defense (331.6 yards per game). In 2011, he started all 12 games and ranked second on the team with 78 tackles (57 solo). Davis appeared in eight games (one start) as a sophomore and started two games as a freshman in 2009. Prior to Memphis, he began his collegiate career at Jones County Junior College in 2008 and saw action in eight games (five starts).
Herrera, 6-1, 249 pounds, has spent most of the season (Weeks 1-5, 7-13) on the team’s practice squad. He has had two stints on the team’s 53-man roster, playing in Week 6 vs. New England and Week 14 at Jacksonville, and assisting on one special teams tackle. Herrera was most recently promoted to the 53-man roster from the practice squad on December 8 and waived on December 15. He was originally selected by the Colts in the sixth round (207th overall) of the 2015 NFL Draft out of Georgia. Herrera started 43-of-54 games at Georgia and totaled 334 tackles (147 solo), 21.0 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, four forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, 11 passes defensed and three interceptions.
Jackson, 6-0, 230 pounds, was signed to the Colts practice squad on December 8. He signed with the Cardinals as an undrafted free agent on May 5, 2015 and spent the entire offseason and most of training camp with the team before being waived on August 31. Jackson played in 48 games at Georgia Southern and totaled 218 tackles (121 solo), 8.0 tackles for loss, 2.0 sacks, two passes defensed, one interception, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.
