The Indianapolis Colts today agreed to terms with kicker Adam Vinatieri on a contract extension.
“We are thrilled to retain Adam as a member of the Colts family,” said Colts General Manager Ryan Grigson. “Adam continues to play at the highest level year in and year out and his hard work, consistency and professionalism are a credit to him being the longest tenured active player in the NFL. Adam has won multiple Super Bowls and is a future Hall of Famer. We look forward to continuing to utilize his championship-pedigree and leadership in our program.”
Vinatieri, 6-0, 206 pounds, was originally signed by the Colts as an unrestricted free agent on March 22, 2006. In Indianapolis, Vinatieri has converted 240-of-277 field goal attempts (86.6 percent) and 375-of-381 PATs for 1,095 points. He owns the Colts record for points scored, extra points made and field goals made. Vinatieri was a member of the Colts Super Bowl XLI championship team. He has played in the second-most playoff games (30) in league history and holds several career NFL postseason records including points scored (234), field goals made (56) and extra points made (66).
Vinatieri, a three-time Pro Bowl selection, has played in 306 career games over his 20-year NFL career. He has connected on 503-of-598 field goal attempts (84.1 percent), made 742-of-755 PATs and scored one two-point conversion for 2,253 career points. Vinatieri is one of only three kickers all-time with 500 career field goals made, joining Morten Andersen (565) and Gary Anderson (538). He ranks sixth all-time in career regular season games played. Vinatieri ranks third in league history in total points and is the NFL’s active leader. He notched 1,158 points during his 10 seasons (1996-2005) with the New England Patriots and is the only player in league history to record 1,000 points with two franchises. Vinatieri’s 84.1 career field goal percentage ranks 15th all-time. He has 26 game-winning field goals in the final minute of the fourth quarter or overtime. Vinatieri has earned AFC Special Teams Player of the Week honors 15 times, NFL Player of the Week honors one time (playoffs) and has been named AFC Special Teams Player of Month four times (2015, 2004, 1999, 1998).
In 2015, Vinatieri converted 25-of-27 field goals (92.6 percent) and 32-of-35 PATs for 107 points. It marked his 18th 100-point season of his career, which extended an NFL record. After missing his first two field goal attempts of the season, Vinatieri finished the season connecting on 25 consecutive attempts, which is the fourth-highest streak in team history. He was named AFC Special Teams Player of the Month for November after he converted all 11 field goal attempts in the month and was the only kicker in the league to record a perfect percentage with 10-or-more kicks. He also added 9-of-10 PATs for 42 points in November. Over the last two seasons (2014-15), Vinatieri has the highest field goal percentage in the league (94.8) after making 55-of-58 field goals attempts.
Vinatieri joined the Colts after playing 10 seasons (1996-2005) with the New England Patriots. He is the only kicker in NFL history to record successful field goals in four Super Bowls (XXXVI, XXXVIII, XXXIX and XLI) and is the only kicker in league history to have played in five.
