The Indianapolis Colts today signed free agent outside linebacker Chris Carter and elevated cornerback Frankie Williams to the 53-man roster from the practice squad. The team also waived outside linebacker Trevor Bates and tackle Jeremy Vujnovich.
Carter, 6-1, 245 pounds, has played in 53 career NFL games (four starts) and totaled 14 tackles (eight solo), one pass defensed, two fumble recoveries and 17 special teams stops with the Baltimore Ravens (2015-16), Cincinnati Bengals (2014-15), Indianapolis Colts (2014) and Pittsburgh Steelers (2011-13). He has seen action in one postseason contest. Carter was originally selected by the Steelers in the fifth round (162nd overall) of the 2011 NFL Draft.
In 2016, Carter played in five games for the Ravens and tallied two special teams tackles. He saw action in a career-high 15 games in 2015 and made six tackles (four solo), one fumble recovery and four special teams stops. In 2014, Carter played in four games and tallied three special teams tackles. He also made his postseason debut and played in one postseason contest with Cincinnati. From 2011-13, Carter appeared in 29 games (four starts) for Pittsburgh and compiled eight tackles (four solo), one pass defensed, one fumble recovery and eight special teams stops.
Williams, 5-9, 190 pounds, was signed to the Colts practice squad on September 6, 2016. He participated in the Colts 2016 offseason program and training camp before being waived on September 5. Williams originally signed with the Colts as an undrafted free agent on May 7, 2016. He played in 48 games (38 starts) at Purdue and totaled 227 tackles (163 solo), 5.5 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, two fumble recoveries, one forced fumble, 36 passes defensed, 10 interceptions (one returned for a touchdown) and one blocked kick. Williams also contributed on special teams with 32 punt returns for 334 yards and 22 kickoff returns for 505 yards.
Bates, 6-2, 247 pounds, was elevated to Indianapolis’ 53-man roster from the practice squad on October 4, 2016. He played in the Colts Week 5 victory over the Chicago Bears and registered one special teams tackle. Bates spent Weeks 1-4 on the Colts practice squad. He was originally selected by Indianapolis in the seventh round (239th overall) of the 2016 NFL Draft. Bates appeared in 46 games at Maine and finished with 207 tackles (106 solo), 19.0 sacks, 10 passes defensed, five forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries (one returned for a touchdown) and three interceptions (one returned for a touchdown).
Vujnovich, 6-5, 300 pounds, was elevated to the Colts’ 53-man roster from the practice squad on October 1, 2016. He saw action on special teams in Week 4 at Jacksonville and was inactive in Week 5 vs. Chicago. Vujnovich spent Weeks 1-2 on the Colts practice squad. He spent the last two seasons on the Green Bay Packers practice squad.
