The Indianapolis Colts today claimed linebacker Deon King off waivers. The team also waived wide receiver Marcus Leak.
King, 6-1, 230 pounds, played in two games (Weeks 9-10) for the San Diego Chargers this season and registered one tackle before being waived on November 14. He was signed to the Chargers practice squad on October 5 and was elevated to the team’s 53-man roster on November 5. King was signed to the Dallas Cowboys practice squad on September 4 and waived two days later. He participated in the Cowboys 2016 offseason program and training camp before being waived during final cuts on September 3. King originally signed with Dallas as an undrafted free agent on May 6, 2016.
Collegiately, King played in 46 games (35 starts) at Norfolk State and totaled 372 tackles, 52.5 tackles for loss, 22.0 sacks, five fumble recoveries, four forced fumbles and three interceptions. He was named All-MEAC three times (2013-15), earning First Team All-MEAC honors in each of his last two seasons (2014-15). King was a consensus First Team FCS All-American as a senior in 2015 after starting all 11 games and leading all Division I (FBS and FCS) players with 163 tackles while adding 11.0 tackles for loss, 3.0 sacks, one interception and one forced fumble. He became NSU’s first-ever winner of the Buck Buchanan Award as the nation’s top FCS defensive player. In 2014, King started all 12 games and finished with 106 tackles, 18.0 tackles for loss, 7.5 sacks, three fumble recoveries, two forced fumbles, two passes defensed and one interception. He started all 12 games in 2013 for the Spartans and recorded 84 tackles, 18.5 tackles for loss, 9.5 sacks, two fumble recoveries and one forced fumble. King played in 11 games as a true freshman in 2012 and tallied 19 tackles, 5.0 tackles for loss, 2.0 sacks and one interception.
Leak, 6-0, 210 pounds, was elevated to the Colts active roster from the practice squad on November 8, 2016. He spent Weeks 7-9 on Indianapolis’ practice squad. Leak participated in the Colts 2016 offseason program and training camp before being waived on August 22. He originally signed with Indianapolis as an undrafted free agent on May 2, 2016. In three seasons at the University of Maryland, Leak played in 27 games (16 starts) and totaled 55 receptions for 775 yards and six touchdowns.
